thoughts = emotions

Driving unnecessarily slow to my mom’s house because I’m just not that excited to see her, I begin to get angry at my CD player. That postal service song I’ve heard a thousand times keeps skipping because of the bumpy dirt road, and the comfort of that song is all that keeps me driving at all. My mind is only focused on the recent series of events that have changed my life while leaving the other parties seemingly unaffected. Maybe I tend to over react to normal situations? I suppose I’ve got to stop searching out tragedy to better understand bright eyes’ lyrics, and it’d probably be a good idea to discontinue the practice of finding a crush just to fill the pages of my diary. Growing up means more than wearing a skirt and carrying a purse, but I’d still rather be naive than bitter and jaded.

ps - if that's too personal then pretend this is a work of fiction.

midnight thirty

My brother wanted to go get a drink with his buddies. My dad went to bed early. I’ve had nothing better to do with my time than bag on the free internet service at the hotel. Here’s what I happened during my wild night in semi-reality:

There’s a lot of bloggers blogging about Tom Cruise right now.
(Am I missing something???)

Accidentally googled myself... Apparently Wittgenstien spelled his name Wittgenstein. So if you type in a google search for Wittgenstien you’ll end up with a link to my blog.
(Stupid “E” before “I” only in stein.)

Sent out ten myspace friend requests...
(See. I am meeting people even if I’m not out “meeting” people.)

Checked the Craig’s list missed connections for like that past month…
(You know you check too!)

Wish me luck!

Today I am heading down to Monte Vista to pick up my dad and bring him up to Denver. We're going to look at places for him to live. I am hoping to convince my brother it is a good idea to have my dad move to here. Both my brother and my dad are stuborn men, so it might be a bit of a challange.

But...
Here goes nothin'!

Indiana is so cool that they don't even need to use daylight savings time.

But if the state of Indiana would do me a favor and tell your congressman John Hostettler to stop the drama and chill the fuck out...that'd be great.

Sometime you just need to be mean...

because being nice isn't always appropriate.

Such is the downfall of a hopeless romantic.

But no need to worry. After brunch with Page and Anne and the afternoon with Skeeter Davis and Sam Cook, life is beautiful once again.

science fair project

waves

Purpose:

The purpose of this post is to show that seeing live music can cure and create almost any aliment.

Hypothesis:

There is something about the combination of sounds and rythm and sometimes lyrics that resonates at certain wave lengths similar to that of the body and mind. Therefore, listening to music can positively or negatively change a person’s state of health either mentally or physically.

Data:

1: Studies have shown that the body operates in waves of 7.98 per second. When the body is ill, these wave lengths can be affected.
2: Certain sounds produced by the body also resonate at about 8 waves per second, for example chanting the word “om.” This is also true for certain notes.
3: I went to see Rilo Kiley last night and my mental/physical state of health was affected by the music.

Conclusion:

Music is medicine. The negative is the postitive.

Apparently she hasn't been able to listen to new music because her sound card is broken. I felt so bad for her that I made a mix and sent it off to Portland, OR. It goes a little something like this:

1 - Bright Eyes "first day of my life"
2 - Death Cab for Cutie "why you'd want to live here"
3 - Bloc Party "positive tension"
4 - Interpol "slowhands"
5 - DeVothchKa "we're leaving"
6 - Starlight Mints
7 - The Rapture "killing"
8 - Cibelle "no prego"
9 - Beck "earthquake weather"
10 - Of Montreal "requiem for an omm"
11 - Pheonix - "everything is everything"
12 - Scisor Sisters "music is the victim"
13 - Peaches "bag it"
14 - MIA "sunshowers"
15 - Liz Phair "flower"
16 - The Sea and Cake "Leeora"
17 - The Postal Service "Silhouettes"
18 - Ugly Casanova "barnacles"

I call it the broken sound card mix.

Who steals flowers?*

daisies

One would think that in the thirty-aught years since the advent of "flower power" the daisy would signify the timelessness of peace, love and good karma. Scott McKenzie sang to us "be sure to wear some flowers in your hair," and evidently some people in this world have taken the line far too literally. Times have undoubtedly changed. Flowers are no longer nice to look at. They are as corruptible as gold, and every bit as ripe for the taking.

It is, arguably, a natural human inclination to brighten one's home inside and out with flowers. This romantic whim struck me yesterday, so I purchased a few happy daisies to adorn my front lawn. Excited by the prospect of planting them today, I had left them out the night before in the hopes that it might rain, and awoke to find they had vanished.

My astonishment could only have been rivaled by my outrage. As one might guess, I asked myself, “Who steals flowers?”

In my more optimistic moments I try to imagine my flowers being stolen for benevolent reasons, e.g., to start an urban garden where funds – and hope – were depleted. I suppose I’m avoiding the harsher reality; Denver is rife with daisy pirates.

And so dear friends I say unto you: guard well your daisies. Let not their fair petals be usurped by foul hands!
