Carson Daly is my Hero: a short essay on the flexable morals of music

I have a DJ gig this Friday night, and I couldn’t be more excited. For that past month, I’ve been conspiring musical selections for the evening. If I had my way, we’d listen to Donovan, Skeeter Davis, and Belle and Sebastian all night. I might get crazy and throw down some Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, too. But I realize these selections aren’t appropriate, especially since this is a hair/fashion show. So I’ve been racking my brain for ideas and seeking out inspiration.

Mark was over at my apartment today. I was apologizing to him for the mess. “Sorry I have records all over my living room floor.”

“Don’t even worry about it. You’ve got a skate board, a snow board, a bike, a scooter, and a car. You’re goin’ places!”

“No I’m not. I’m going crazy trying to think of what to songs to play for this fashion show.”

“Just give the people what they want to hear.”

He got me thinking. “Pop culture huh?” But I’m so out of touch. I don’t even watch MTV. TRL is stupid. Granted, I’ve only seen the show once and that was years ago. A wide-eyed Mariah Carrie was the special surprise musical guest. Wearing only a skin-tight baby tee and a bathing suit bottom, she gave out ice cream to all the screaming, manic teenagers. I don’t even think she ever performed. Judging by his reaction, host Carson Daly was none to impressed with her. “Are you feeling okay Mariah?” Oblivious to the intention of the question she responded, “I feel fantastic Carson.” “Um….yeah…right…okay. Let’s cut to commercial.” I’m pretty sure she was admitted to a rehab clinic shortly after that appearance.

Carson Daly was obviously just as disgusted with this display as I was. I’ve never met the guy, but I get a sense that he didn’t listen to any of the music he introduced on that show. But he was still the host.

Case in point…

DJ’s don’t have rules. They just have habits. And habits are meant to be broken. My goal is to fill the dance floor and make everyone have a memorable evening. My inspiration is you.
